Over 200 people have joined together to honour the life and memory of the late Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin who was assassinated 20 years ago at a Peace Rally in Tel Aviv.

The 20th anniversary communal event was organised by the Zionist Council of NSW together with the Jewish International Film Festival and the Zionist Federation of NSW.

At Event Cinemas in Bondi Junction, community members gathered to watch the 2015 Yves Azeroual documentary “Yitzhak Rabin:  a Soldier Devoted to Peace”, a film which looks back at a man of courage who devoted his life to his country, who was committed to bringing peace to his people. Community member Levi Cohen-Solal said the film was “a touching recount of Rabin’s life, an intimate insight into understanding the psychology of a complicated man.”
After the film screening Zionist Council of NSW President Richard Balkin commenced the ceremony with a moving speech and tribute to Rabin. The ceremony focused on the youth and included a recount of Rabin’s last speech. A Yizkor candle was lit and a musical tribute to Rabin was performed by Moriah students singing ‘Od Yavo Shalom Aleynu’.
The community was then invited to join in an interactive exhibition guided by Zionist Youth Movement leaders held in the cinema. Gabi Kaltmann, Youth Rabbi at Central reflected on the event, “It was uplifting and inspirational to see such a large turnout to commemorate the life of a true leader of Israel, and the Jewish people.”
