Sydney eruv approved by council
The eruv containing the Jewish community in the northern Sydney suburbs of St Ives has been approved by the local council.
Ku-ring-gai Council voted unanimously to approve the eruv in a meeting which heard one speaker stating that the Jews are creating an enclave.
The eruv has been approved on the basis of the authorities attaching plastic to power poles.
Rabbi Gad Krebs of local synagogue Kehillat Masada told J-Wire: “The eruv has been functioning for around 18 months but the times have been challenging. It was very comforting to hear the council’s decision”.
Eight of the 10-member council voted in favour of erecting the conduits in the 20kms which borders the eruv.
NSW Jewish Board of Deputies chief executive Vic Alhadeff told J-Wire: “We applaud Ku-ring-gai Council on its sensible decision.”
“The eruv enables Jewish residents of St Ives to observe their faith in an innocuous way and we can all now put this issue behind us and move on.”
J-Wire understands around 400 Jewish families live within the eruv.
