Mental illness now affects one in five Australians, meaning over a million people suffer from a form of mental health issue, most commonly depression and anxiety.

Yet many sufferers still experience stigma and lack access to treatment.

With these shocking facts in mind, CBDChabad, an organisation serving the Jewish community in and around the city of Sydney has planned an event designed to help fight the stigma of mental illness and to increase awareness about mental health.

The Rabbi of the City of Sydney, Rabbi Danny Yaffe together with his wife Rebbetzin Sara-Tova, is excited to now launch ‘Challenge the Black Dog’, to be held on Sunday, 29 October.  The evening will feature addresses by The Hon. Scott Farlow MLC, the Chair of the Parliamentary Friends for Mental Health, and City of Sydney Deputy Mayor Jess Miller. Mental health practitioners who will speak include anxiety expert and exercise physiologist Dr Jarrod Meerkin PhD and esteemed clinical psychologist Renee Mills, as well as representatives from the respected charities, the Black Dog Institute and Our Big Kitchen.

The Black Dog Institute is a pioneer in the diagnosis, early intervention, prevention and treatment of mental illnesses such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder and is at the forefront of suicide prevention.  Our Big Kitchen is a community organisation conceived to nourish, educate and inspire people in need and share one main ingredient: love.  During the event, attendees will enjoy participating in preparing meals which will be distributed to those in crisis in the Sydney community.

The event will raise funds for the participating charities with the majority of the ticket price going to the charities. Those who are unable to attend the event can still show support by donating via the online system, at www.trybooking.com/PYCT.

Please note, the correct date is Sunday 29 October (not 7 July!) – a very worthwhile initiative
