More than 300 supporters and 50 opponents heard that a proposal by  Orthodox Jews in Sydney for a new Eruv has suffered a setback. Plans have been deferred.

After almost six years planning a biblical boundary on the north shore of the harbor city, Ku-ring-gai local council decided Wednesday night to defer the decision in order to conduct more research.

“We are very disappointed that they don’t appear to have done the necessary research,” said Vic Alhadeff, CEO of the New South Wales Jewish Board of Deputies.

The plan had been hotly contested in the local media, with some scurrilous  comments against Jews and Israel prompting outrage from Jewish leaders.

There are an estimated 4000 Jews living on the north shore with less than 10 per cent Orthodox.

An Eruv was erected in Bondi on the east of the city in 2002.
