Dr Danny Lamm, the president of The Executive Council of Australian Jewry sends a Rosh Hashana message…

Dr Danny Lamm – president of the ECAJ

We are blessed to live in Australia where all of the major political parties support Israel’s right to live in peace and security and all of them oppose anti-Israel boycotts or other measures intended to attack Israel’s legitimacy.

Sadly, Israel finds itself under brutal polemical assault not only from fanatical dictatorial regimes in its own neighbourhood but also increasingly from government officials and civil society organisations in the democratic world who have forgotten, or choose to ignore, the lessons of the past.  Most painfully, small numbers of Jews, including some from within Israel, have capitulated to the pressure and joined their ranks, a few of them even adding their voices to calls for Israel’s destruction.

These so-called alternative Jewish voices do not speak for the vast majority of us, but they get a good hearing because there are so many people who cannot accept the reality of a proud Jewish people in charge of its own destiny, and of Israel, the State of the Jewish people, flourishing as a sovereign equal among the nations.    Even in Australia we have seen a perceptible rise in the incidence of crude anti-Jewish rhetoric in public discourse.

In the new year Israel may be called upon to make fateful decisions having far-reaching implications.  Rosh Hashana is traditionally a time for taking stock of our words and deeds over the past year and resolving to improve ourselves in the year ahead.  This Rosh Hashana especially we pray that Israel’s leaders are blessed with wisdom and judgement, and that each of us may have a shana tova umetuka  a year of health, happiness, prosperity and peace.

…… and thus drawning the silence of the vast majority.

But, hey, do the loud ones get to be photographed with the politicians ” that matter” !!??? No way, so what do they get to put with pride on their mantle pieces !
Then , again, do those vociferous irrelevant minority get to go to international conferences, trainig courses for communal leadership – no bloody way !!!
So, Burdie, whose cage you reckon you are rattling, mainly because you will never get an answer from the real deal/gisheft leaders. ( see the abovementioned brilliant silence strategy ).
