A group of Years 7 and 8 students from Melbourne’s Mount Scopus College joined over 3000 Victorian school students and dignitaries to pay their respects at a special Light Horse Commemoration Ceremony for the Centenary of the Battle of Beersheba at the Shrine of Remembrance,

To commemorate the centenary of the battle and the legend of the Australian Light Horse, students laid a wreath on behalf of Mount Scopus College. They also heard a thoughtful and informative address by the Honourable Linda Dessau, Governor of Victoria, as well as a number of other speakers, developing their understanding of this historical event. Students also had the opportunity to chat to a veteran whose father died at the battle of Beersheba.

They watched a procession of horses and riders in Light Horse uniform and heard how at dusk on 31 October 1917, the 4th Australian Light Horse Brigade executed a successful mounted charge against Turkish forces at Beersheba and struck the decisive blow at the Battle of Beersheba and secured a place in military history.
