The day was a reminder that bullying is a ‘no-go’ zone. At assemblies students and teachers created skits and videos that reminded all of the effects of bullying on the victims and the importance for students to report bullying to a trusted adult so that it can be addressed. Students were also reminded that the actions of bystanders who stand up for the victim and provide support to them are particularly important in stopping bullying in its tracks.

Anti-bullying-by-SierraPrimary School students made badges with anti-bullying messages, which they wore proudly on their uniforms and even used for a photography project, highlighting awareness of the issue. Staff members were also involved, wearing t-shirts with the message “Emanuel says no to bullying”.

Year 5 student, Zach Nabarro, said, “Anti-bullying Day reminds people not to bully others. You need to be an ‘upstander’, not a bystander – instead of standing around watching someone in trouble, do something.”

Anne Hastings, Emanuel School Principal, also donned her ‘Emanuel says no to bullying’ t-shirt, sending a clear message that bullying is not tolerated at the School. “Bullying is a serious issue. It dehumanises both the victim and the abuser with often far-reaching consequences for both. I am proud that Emanuel strives to be a place where the students take personal responsibility for keeping each other safe. Although today is dedicated to increasing awareness of bullying and its negative effects, it is important to remember that every day is actually anti-bullying day. ”
