Each of  the 410 Australian participants in the recent 18th Maccabiah carried a towel in their baggage destined for a children’s home in Israel…and Sandy Sher who conceived the scheme says thank you to all those who helped.

The children live in Emunah’s Neve Michael Home and around fifteen of them visited the Australian team at their Tel Aviv pre-camp in the Dan Panorama where the towels were handed over to the Home.

Sher had visited the Home previously and told friends in the textile business in her hometown of Melbourne that the children were using threadbare towels in the Neve Michael Home. She received a donation of 500 towels from the Fried family and with the help of Maccabi management successfully asked each member to carry one to Israel in their baggage and bring it to the first team meeting at the hotel. Around 15 of the children joined the meeting to collect the towels and take them back to the home which specialises in caring for at-risk children.

Some team members also donated excess uniforms and sporting equipment for the Home’s use.

Sher told J-Wire: “The Maccabi organisation is to be congratulated for making this special moment happen. No words can sufficiently express the gratitude of the children….the smiles on their faces has left a mark that will never be forgotten. For each and every one who helped..this was a mitzvah and please accept this as a personal thank you”

The story of the towels has been broadcast on Jewish Life TV….watch it by clicking here
