Reprieve for Adelaide’s Massada
The South Australian Government has reprieved Adelaide’s only Jewish day school from closure.The school was facing a complete shut down this month but an emergency meeting has convinced the government to allow Massada more time to plan its future.
The Government has funds available to allow the institution to remain open, but will only release the money when it is assured that the local community can fulfil its responsibility to reach an acceptable level of self-funding. At an emergency meeting held last week, the school raised $30,000 with further pledges totalling around $50,000 still to materialise.
The Executive Council of Australian Jewry was represented at that meeting by its president, Robert Goot. He told J-Wire: “If the school was shut down, it would be a body blow to the community in South Australia from which it may never recover.”
He said that the ECAJ is considering ways as to how it can best advance the cause of ensuring the future of the school.
The school has asked members of Australia’s Jewish community to donate $18 to support its cause.
