Sydney’s Mizrachi Synagogue has called an EGM to deal with a proposal to make the Rabbi’s position redundant…or sell their torahs.

Rabbi Moshe Gutnick told J-Wire: “I have been with the Shule for over 21 years and now I am facing this. I am taking legal advice and don’t want to make a statement at this stage.”

Mizrachi president, Mark Schneider, has issued a statement saying that 30 members had petitioned the board following the collapse of a bid to merge the congregation with the Great synagogue outlaying serious concerns with Mizrachi’s current financial situation.

Schneider said: “The shule is in deep financial crisis and our current cost structure will need to change. The only way forward is for the shule to operate without any Rabbi.”

He added: “If we do not make the Rabbi’s position redundant, we would be forced to sell our sifrei torah and eventually the shule. This is not an option.”

The EGM is scheduled for March 31.
