The Union for Progressive Judaism has expressed its grave concern over the recent escalation in the violent confrontation across the Israel/Gaza border.

Steve Denenberg, the UPJ executive director has released the following statement:

“We share the distress felt by Jews around the world at the barrage of rocket fire from Gaza targeting Israelis and we echo the call for the international community to pressure Hamas to bring an end to the attacks that have forced Israel to take military action.

We are heartened by the unequivocal support of Australia and other democracies around the world for Israel’s right to protect her citizens.

As ever, we are greatly saddened by the loss of innocent lives – Israeli and Palestinian – and hope that if a diplomatic solution cannot be found that the military operation can be completed with speed and in a way that minimizes the loss of life.

We in the Progressive Movement stand together with all who pray and advocate for peace and for the safety of Israelis who have for too long been the targets of violent and unremitting rocket attacks. Od yavo shalom aleinu (may peace come to us soon).”

These people are dangerous idealists. There is no one to negotiate with! Hamas and Hezballah are terrorist organizations doing the bidding of the biggest terrorist organization of all, Iran! In Arabic, the term is Hudna. It means “a temporary truce”. It is used to lull an enemy you can’t beat until you can beat them. Or haven’t you noticed that Hamas’ hudna conditions are demands on Israel, while offering NOTHING in return! Egypt, Turkey and Iran are all blaming Israel, calling her a terrorist state. The 800 missles fired into Israel BEFORE don’t count. No other nation would have shown Israels restraint. Only Jewish Israel is expected to show such restraint. With Jordan about to go Islamist, Israel will me surrounded. With Iran supplying missiles in unlimited numbers, the situation becomes intollerable.
Only a bloody regional war will then solve it. Instead of the hundreds now, it will be thousands or tens of thousands. And once Iran has nuclear weapons????

As a long time member of a Liberal shul, I am proud that Progressive Judaism calls for peace and, if war cannot be prevented, that the campaign be quick and the loss of life be minimised.

The concern for all life, Jewish and non-Jewish alike, and the sympathy with Israelis under attack from Gaza is touching.

It would have been a good deal more touching had the Union for Progressive Judaism called for peace and respect for life in the months and years of terrorists attacks from Hamastan before Israel was finally forced to act.

I turned to this posting expecting the Progressives to go into bat for the palestinians.

    And I was right.

    And they are WRONG !!!
