ANOTHER CANCER BREAKTHROUGH

Researchers at Israel’s Weizmann Institute of Science have developed a method to reinforce the power of cells that kill cancerous tumors by starving them of oxygen, allowing immunotherapy treatments to be used in targeting previously immune solid tumors.

According to a report, studies have shown that growing T cells under low-oxygen conditions helps them kill other cells in a laboratory dish, but their actual cancer-fighting ability had never been tested before, until now.

The team now hopes to implement the treatment in humans to verify its efficiency.

A NEW YEAR’S GIFT

As Jewish families across the world reach for the pomegranate that they customarily eat on Rosh Hashanah, they may not realize that the fruit, with its juicy red seeds and crown-like crest, could hold a key to graceful aging.

King Solomon is said to have designed his crown based on that of the pomegranate, and the image of the fruit often appears on ancient coins of Judea. The pomegranate is said to have 613 seeds, which correspond with the 613 Jewish precepts or commandments set out by the Torah regulating the Jewish way of life. For this reason, and because it represents fruitfulness, knowledge, learning and wisdom, and is seasonal in Israel, it customarily appears on Jewish New Year dinner tables.

The association of the pomegranate with knowledge, learning and wisdom may not be far from the truth. Pomegranate seed oil (PSO) contains high concentrations of punicic acid, or omega 5 as it is also called, which is believed to be one of the most powerful antioxidants in nature.

HEART WARMING NEWS

Ahead of World Heart Day, the Israel Heart Society released data on heart disease in the country showing a 50% decrease in mortality rates from heart disease over the past 15 years, placing Israel as one of the leading Western countries in heart disease detection, prevention and treatment.

Despite the high number of people suffering from heart disease, Israel is one of the only countries in the Western world to have managed to reduce its mortality rate to levels that no longer make it the leading cause of death, thanks to the advanced cardiac care given to patients.

MEAT FROM THE LABORATORY

The time is fast approaching when steaks, lamb chops and chickens will be produced without the need to engage in intensive farming, extensive water usage and abuse of livestock.

China has signed a $300 million deal to partner with Israeli high-tech companies working to create laboratory-grown meat as the Asian giant looks to embrace technologies that will help it cut down on harmful emissions and pollution.

If the laboratory production of meat products becomes a financial and feasible possibility it is going to revolutionize the lives of millions. Will it be Kosher? Experts are now examining the Halachic implications.
