We have transitioned from summer to winter time and right on cue twenty four hours after we prayed for rain the heavens opened up. If forming a governing coalition was that easy we would by now have a Government but alas politicians lack the ability to overcome their egotistical tendencies.

In contrast, our innovators and motivators ensure continuing achievements in many fields of endeavour.

RECORD BLOOD DONATIONS

More than 1,350 units of blood were donated at a huge MDA blood donation station at the Samaria Regional Division,

The goal of the initiative was to break the Israeli record that currently stands at 780 units of blood in one fundraiser. Once the record is broken, organizers hope to collect more than a thousand units of blood.

The operation included 100 MDA blood donors, which included volunteers as well as soldiers from the reserve battalion of Magen David Adom’s blood services unit.

WILDLIFE HOSPITAL

It is not only humans who benefit from Israel’s advanced medical system. Injured birds are also receiving world-class treatment.

The Israeli Wildlife Hospital, operated by the Nature and Parks Authority and the Ramat Gan Safari Park is building a new enclosure, set to become a flight school for injured birds before they return to the wild. The hospital has been operating for 14 years, and while in the beginning, it treated about 300 animals a year, today patients number 6,000 a year.

The rising intensity calls for enlarging the hospital and the three organizations have decided on two new enclosures and new and on purchasing new and modern equipment. The new facilities are set to serve birds, and especially birds of prey, that arrive in the hospital for various reasons, like electrocutions, injuries and poisonings

Birds often arrive in the hospital with severe injuries and have to go through complicated orthopedic surgeries that call for a long rehabilitation period. Many end up unable to fly even after rehabilitation.

In order to be released back into the wild, these birds require a second rehabilitation period that focuses on re-learning how to fly and practising it. This demands a very large enclosure that allows flight, set to be built as part the new enlargement project, in order to get these patients out of the hospital and up in the sky.

MORE AMAZING TECHNOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENTS

The New Year has hardly started and already details of more exciting innovations have hit the headlines.

Watch and marvel:

MEAT IN SPACE

Is this the beginning of a new era in the production of meat products where no animals need to be killed for human consumption? It has enormous implications for countries such as New Zealand and Australia and opens up a whole new unchartered future.
