On the other hand

Israel’s space capsule is orbiting in space and hopefully is still on course for a moon landing on 11 April.

Our politicians are aiming for a soft landing on Election Day on 9 April but many of them will be lost in space before then.

Meanwhile, Israel forges ahead with more earth-shattering achievements.

REVOLUTIONARY BURN TREATMENT

An Israeli startup has developed a medical device that it says can dress burns and other wounds with nanomaterials that mimic human tissue and peel off once the skin below is regenerated.

The temporary and transparent skin layer that the device generates can be applied without touching the charred skin, helping prevent infections. The product, called SpinCare, can be operated by physicians and other medical staff working in hospitals or clinics or providing home care.

The transparency of the layer allows doctors to monitor the wound as it heals, and the treatment does not require any further dressing, a process that can be painful. The product consists of a lightweight gun-shaped device and a “spin-kit” of disposable ampoules containing a polymer solution. The polymer solution — in which the dissolved polymers can be either natural or synthetic — can be combined with various additives according to the nature of the wound and the patient’s needs: antibacterial creams, antibiotics, collagen, silicone, hydrogel, and cannabinoids.

The main innovation is in the “miniaturized” size of the device, which makes it portable and easy to maneuver.

The device is held with two hands and activated via two buttons. The “gun” is pointed at the wound from a distance of about 20 centimetres, or eight inches, and one ampoule is “fired.” The proprietary polymer substance hits the wound, where it instantly turns into a nano-fibrous white dressing that works as a sterilized artificial skin, the company said.

The device “manufactures nanofibers directly on the wound without touching it. This method of dressing wounds reduces the pain involved as well as the risk of causing infection.

The whole treatment can last 30 seconds or a minute depending on the size of the area that needs to be covered. The layer needs to be applied just once at the point of care and remains in place until new epidermal tissue has grown underneath, a process that can take one to three weeks. When the new tissue is regenerated, “the artificial skin peels off naturally and painlessly.”

“ZOMBIES” SIGHTED IN TEL AVIV

The city of Tel Aviv is testing out new “zombie” traffic lights, designed to save smartphone users too absorbed to look up and see the signals for themselves. Bright LED light strips between two pylons have been set into the sidewalks at the intersection of David Bloch Street and Ibn Gvirol, turning red or green in sync with the traffic lights.

Engineers hope that if smartphone users are already looking down, they might actually notice the bright lights on the ground.

For those who still can’t take their eyes off their phone screen, the strip will turn green when the traffic light changes to let them know they can now cross the intersection.

The pilot project in central Tel Aviv will study if pedestrians who are looking down at their mobile devices actually even notice the LED strips and stop before stepping into the intersection. Based on the results, the city will decide whether to install the devices in other parts of the city.

WE LOVE TO TALK – IT’S NOW OFFICIAL

A PEW study now confirms what most of us already suspected. Watch this video and discover how Israel tops the rest of the world:

INNOVATION 1948

It is generally believed that Israel’s innovation reputation and ability to think outside the box is a recent development.

In actual fact as this video demonstrates the Jewish State’s ability to overcome insurmountable obstacles and its amazing adaptability was evident already at it rebirth in 1948.
