Off the air…but only temporarily

Melbourne’s Jewish radio J-AIR is to temporarily suspend its live broadcasting from the 5pm on Friday.
The suspension is due to J-AIR moving its studios from Oakleigh to Caulfield North.

Station manager Robert Bontschek said J-AIR’s 30 live programs (in English, Hebrew and Russian) would resume in late July after the new studios had been built and tested. “In the meantime, we will be playing recorded music and repeats of earlier programs,” he said.

“We apologise for the inconvenience to our growing band of loyal listeners, but we have no choice. We are a small community station run by volunteers and do not have the resources to build duplicate new studios while still being on air from Oakleigh,” he said. “It’s an enforced break we would rather not have.

“Our move to Caulfield North will be of benefit to the Melbourne Jewish community and J-AIR.

“We will have a big presence right in the heart of the community, making it easier for guests to go live in the studios and easier for our presenters and technicians to access the station.”

J-AIR had spent about two years in its Oakleigh studios (about 10 kilometres east of Caulfield North) but had to move after its landlord required the space back for its expanding business.

The Oakleigh studios were purpose-built for a small community radio station and included air-conditioned on-air studios, a production studio, an engineering and rack room, and a meeting/guests room.

The Caulfield North premises will be smaller but will be efficient and compact and will provide all facilities needed for a dynamic community radio station such as J-AIR.

J-AIR can be heard at 87.8 on the FM dial in Melbourne or streaming on the internet at j-air.com.au
