After nine months of stirring the pot, the matzo balls are finally on the boil and the Jewish Museum of Australia’s Melbourne Jewish Short Film Festival ‘Celluloid Soup’ is heading for a climax with the Festival Screening night on October 21 at Melbourne’s Astor Theatre.

For the first time this year, Celluloid Soup went above and beyond the making and screening of short films. Participants enjoyed a film school, with guest lecturers in a range of film-related topics.

Designed to engage, teach and inspire film makers, the turnouts were strong, just like the flavour. A number of the sous chefs at film school have submitted movies, some for the first time.

Taking into account the festival’s theme, Kosher Lovin’, this year there was a strong focus on story telling, and improvements in the technical aspects of film making  – these fail-safe ingredients are sure to cook up a fantastic night’s viewing..

This year the judges this year were Yael Bergman, Daniel Besen, Zeddy Lawrence and Rebecca Forgasz, who taste tested the films and brought the menu down to just 12 tasty dishes..

As usual, a large tablespoon of humour is a failsafe addition in this year’s festival, but films have also had a flavour of documentary and emotion.

No good meal is complete without dessert and following the gala, this year’s after party will be held at Electric Lady Land just up the road from the Astor on Chapel Street.

Tickets are can be purchased from the Jewish Museum of Australia over the phone 8534 3600 or in person,  6 Alma Rd St Kilda Victoria 3182. Or at the Astor 1 Chapel Street
St. Kilda VIC 3182. Doors open 7pm and the screening starts at 8pm sharp.
