Irit Wilder was a backseat passenger in a rental car in which another Israeli couple was travelling when it left the road near Te Anau and hit a tree. Mrs Wilder, from Kiryat Tivon died as a result.

New Zealand police told J-Wire that her husband was travelling with a guide, also believed to be an Israeli, in another rental car “about five minutes ahead”.

When the lead vehicle realised that the second car was not not in their vision, they turned round and drove back discovering the accident.

According to police, the two couples and their 53-yr-old Israeli guide were heading towards the Downs Water Ferry which was to have taken them across the Sound to the beginning of a planned five day hike on the famous Milford Track.

The party had overnighted in Te Anau and spent the morning driving towards Milford stopping at the Homer Tunnel before heading back towards the ferry.

A police spokesperson told J-Wire: “I can confirm that the the front seat passengers were wearing seatbelts and that the car’s airbags engaged. We cannot yet confirm whether or not the deceased was wearing a seat belt.”

The injured were tended by an American doctor and a New Zealand orthopedic surgeon also traveling the road on holiday. Irit Wilder died at the scene of the accident.

J-Wire has images of the deceased woman who is expected to be flown home to Israel for burial this week but is honoring the family’s request not publish her photograph.

The following announcement was placed on the web site of Medicalix, the pharmaceutical and medical services company Irit Wilder co-founded and of which she was the CEO:
