Not a happy AFL rabbi

Melbourne’s Rabbi Glasman’s supplications for a Collingwood victory on Shabbat went unanswered…

But, undaunted, the chief minister of St Kilda Shul and president of the Rabbicinal Council of Victoria lives in hope of seeing his beloved AFL side advance to the final stages of the championship.

Rabbi Yaakov Glasman

In his weekly email letter to his congregants, Rabbi Yaakov Glasman wrote: “I need to ask for your help for something important. I know you don’t want to hear about it but this Friday night will see the Pies take on Hawthorn. Now, as if the week before the High Holidays wasn’t pressuring enough on your poor rabbi, having to prepare sermons for 1000 people and build lung capacity to blow 100 sounds out of that mammoth shofar, the kishke-wrenching preliminary finals is the last thing I need on my plate right now. So I’ll need your support over the coming days to help me through it. The best way you can support your rabbi is by fervently praying for a Collingwood victory. After all, if the Pies win, you’ll have a happier rabbi, which will mean better services over the High Holidays, which will mean a more enjoyable experience for you. A grumpy rabbi will mean lousy sermons and an uninspiring service. Now which would you prefer?”

Collingwood went down to Hawthorn 97 to 135.

Rabbi Glasman told J-Wire: “I still believe in miracles…we do have a second chance!  It’s all in good fun…we all know there are much more serious issues to be dealt with than footy.”
