No to the Coalition says AFOPA
The Australian Friends of Palestine Association has advised its mailing list to preference the ALP in this week’s federal election…and to vote for the Greens in the Senate.
Their email read: “In the past AFOPA has polled political parties before elections and advised the results. We have not been able to do such polling this year. However, we are very familiar with the parties’ policies and actions on Palestine-Israel and would like you to take this knowledge with you into the polling booth when you vote next Saturday, 7 September.
This advice relates only to voting issues on Palestine-Israel matters.
The ALP has shown signs of moving to at least a balanced policy. Its vote in the UN last November abstaining from the call upgrading the status of Palestine was a move forward.
The Coalition has made very negative pronouncements in recent days. It criticizes the UN abstention. It would have voted against the upgraded status for Palestine. It threatens to outlaw BDS actions.
As between the major parties AFOPA considers the ALP should be preferenced.
The Greens continue to have the most favourable policies towards the conflict and a just resolution. The Executive urges a vote for Sarah Hansen-Young in the Senate. If Sarah Hanson-Young were to lose her seat it is highly likely that the Coalition would have control of both Houses. Such an eventuality could be highly detrimental to our cause.”
AFOPA so impressive, so candid, so desperate they have abandoned deceit and say it the way it has been forever. Oil and some other matter always comes to surface………….
Good on you AFOPA. It is a defensible position to take.
