NIF says “the best way to see a new side of Israel”
Applications have opened for the fifth cohort of the New Israel Fund Australia’s Naomi Chazan Fellowship.
Israel in 2019 faces a unique set of challenges and the Naomi Chazan Fellowship equips emerging leaders in Australia’s Jewish community with the knowledge and tools to address them.
The flagship component of the program is a 10-day trip to Israel in July to meet with local social justice and human rights activists. In addition, fellows will participate in a unique round table event in November 2019 for a day of workshops, brainstorming, discussions and opportunities to interact with inspiring Israeli and Australian leaders..
In Israel, the Australian group will be joined by fellows from the UK, the US and Canada. The programs develops leaders in their 20s and 30s and are ideal for those who have already visited or spent time in Israel.
The fellowship program has 20 Australian alumni who have been deeply affected by what they saw and learned during their Israel experience.
“The trip was so interesting and extremely informative. The fast pace of the days and squeezing so much into them was a great way to show us just how many people are trying to make a difference for people in need. I felt very inspired by many of the organisations with whom we met,” said Liat Kedem one of this year’s fellows.
“The Fellowship allows emerging Australian leaders in the Australian Jewish community to meet Israelis from a range of backgrounds who are working to further the values of freedom and democracy ingrained in the Declaration of Independence,” said NIF Australia Executive Director Liam Getreu.
“The Fellowship is the best way to see the real Israel and witness first hand the work being done to make it more inclusive and just: promoting religious freedom and pluralism, tackling racism and discrimination, ending the occupation of the Palestinian territories and working for equal opportunities for all segments of Israeli society. The Fellowship is a unique opportunity to better understand the challenges that Israel currently faces,” he added.
So far, fellows have come from a diverse range of occupations and backgrounds. Some work as lawyers, teachers, health professionals and more. Some have experience as leaders in the Zionist youth movements, on campus with AUJS, in their shules or with social justice organisations.
This year’s Fellowship trip to Israel is from 14-23 July. The cost of the program is $1,900 which includes flights and accommodation while in Israel. NIF Australia is grateful to our donors for funding the program to make it accessible and affordable.
