Trial adjourned – and charges dropped

The trial of a man charged following an alleged attack on a group of Sydney Jews walking home after Shabbat dinner in Sydney last October has been adjourned .

26-yr-old Robert Tamaki Clifford was remanded in custody yesterday in Sydney’s Central Local Court. He has been charged with affray and occasioning grievous bodily harm following the alleged attack but has pleaded not guilty.

Clifford  is alleged to have been a member of a group of men who attacked th eBehar family and two others as they walked home from a Shabbat dinner. As they walked by the group of men they were allegedly subject to verbal abuse. The court heard that the grow was called f….ing Jews and dirty Jew c…nts.

The prosecution stated that two youths approached Elias and Leah Behar and their son Shlomo stepped in to defend them.

Prosecutor Clayton Bridge said that Shlomo Behar was thrown to the ground and kicked and punched.

Behar’s father Elias was also thrown to the ground while family friends Shlomo  ben-Haim and 39-yr-old Zeev  Aronstam were repeatedly punched.

As the group headed towards a pub two security guards came to their rescue. But according to the prosecution, CCTV cameras are alleged to have detected Clifford wielding a weapon.

Police claim that a knife found at the scene has DNA evidence linking it to Clifford.

The case has been adjourned until July 1.

Two youths allegedly part of the group which attacked the Jewish friends will appear in Bedara Juvenile Court next month.

Charges against a fifth person, Spartaco Marciano di Bella have been dropped by the DPP.

    Are we trusting the justice system? Or more importantly can we, it’s hard to tell these days with what has come to light on many and varied issues where justice has to be seen to be done…..
