Satisfying Jewish Appetites
Sydney is in for a culinary treat following the announcement of the first ever Jewish Culture Fest.
This inaugural event is part of The Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Month presented by Citi and offers demonstrations, cook-offs, workshops, talks and food stalls.
The program is still being finalised but it will feature Jewish MasterChef contestants Alice Zaslavsky and Aaron Harvie, Jewish My Kitchen Rules runners-up Noah Rose and Clint Yudelman, as well as community food cook book authors, The Monday Morning Cooking Club and One Egg is a Fortune. There will also be an Ashkenazi-Sephardi cook-off, which is expected to be a fun yet fierce battle.
The day is designed to showcase Jewish food and culture from around the world, celebrating the diverse culinary traditions gathered by various Jewish communities over time. “Participants will be able to delve into issues and ideas behind generations of Jewish gastronomy and experience tastes from across Europe, the Middle East and beyond,” said organiser Michael Misrachi.
“It is an opportunity to go beyond the stereotypes of chicken soup and bagels” added Misrachi. Participants will have an opportunity to learn hands-on how to make and taste couscous, borekas, challah, chocolate, chapattis, whiskey and much more.
Talks will highlight the art of bagel making, the role of food in religion, the behind-the-scenes of kosher slaughter, and healthy eating. Many of the talks and demonstrations will include tastings, but participants will also be able to purchase food from a range of stallholders selling freshly prepared and packaged foods.
