New Zealand Jews meet Prime Minister Key on Shechita issue

New Zealand Jewish community representatives have met with Prime Minister John Key to discuss the new Code of Animal Welfare which effectively outlaws Shechita.

John Key, who is himself Jewish told the group: “We want the Jewish community to be strong and vibrant in New Zealand”.

The Prime Minister indicated to the group that the matter was “complex” and that he needed time to consider the issues.

However, Mrime Minister Key acknowledged that the group which included New Zealand Council president Stephen Goodman may have to taken legal action if no alternative solution could be found.

Other members of the community group included Dame Lesley Max, John Barnett, Garth Cohen – president of the Auckland Hebrew Congregation, Sarah Katz and Deborah Levy representing New Zealand Jewish Youth.

  1. The issue of rutual slaughter has had always stood as uncomfortable topic in Jewish community public relations outside Israel

    Australia conducts massive trade in Agricultural products or Meat products and live Herd export to The Middle East.

    Jewish communities would be better served by direct meat import from Israel.

    Newzealand could lead a new diplomacy in trade that takes in to considerations such nations as Ethiopia,Eritrea,Somaliland,Puntland,Somalia or The Horn of Africa.
