Scottish-born artist/photographer Jamie Harris has made a new life for himself in Perth and an exhibition of his work will open in the Western Australian city next month.

Harris, 33,  is deeply influenced by the ocean and for the beach-loving sand-gropers his work should prove easy to appreciate. The artist, who also teaches his craft, settled in Australia in September last year. This will be his first exhibition. Harris was born in Glasgow and studied in Dundee.

He told J-Wire: “As an art teacher I worked in the Scottish highlands for 5 years in a secondary school before moving on to a smaller school in Aberdeenshire, teaching children with social, emotional and behavioral difficulties. In this new position, I was able to relocate to an old fisherman’s cottage only a few metres away from the ocean. During my two years there I continued to paint, using oils, acrylics and occasionally emulsion paints on whatever surfaces I could afford.

I have always been fascinated by the play of light on water and have concentrated on trying to recreate fleeting moments of beauty that I experience when in the ocean. With bold use of colour I feel I can capture the immediacy and intensity of shifting light conditions on waves and water surfaces.

I relocated to Perth last September and moved into a home with my fiance, where I have been painting almost every day. I have exhibited all over Scotland but this is my first solo show in Perth . This opportunity to exhibit at the blend(er) gallery came up by chance, and in this show I will be hanging a selection of paintings, drawings and photographs, spanning over the last 8 years. Some of the work was made in Scotland and others are directly related to my time in Australia.
