An anonymous donor from Melbourne has donated $10,000 to the Executive Council of Australian Jewry to be added to the $20,000 raised by the Adelaide community to keep South Australia’s only Jewish day school open…and in Adelaide itself another donor who does not want to be named matched the $10,000 raised by rest of the community.President of the ECAJ, Dr Danny Lamm, said: “The ECAJ is delighted that the Adelaide Jewish community has raised sufficient funds to enable Massada College to continue, in the short term, to provide a Jewish Education to its children.

Experience teaches us that a Jewish day school is pivotal to the  success of any Jewish community.  It is therefore vital that Massada College should receive support to continue its mission, and the ECAJ appeals to the community to underpin efforts not only to keep Massada afloat but also to expand its enrolments to ensure its continued viability.”

The Melbourne donor has effectively matched the $10,000 donated to the school by Adelaide’s community matching unnamed benefactor. But He  stood aside from the others pledging that he would match whatever the others raised.

Norman Schueler is the President of the Jewish Community Council of South Australia. He told J-Wire: “95% of the money raised in Adelaide came from non-parents. It is significant recognition of the need to secure  Jewish education in the city for future generations.”

Schueler added: “The money will keep the school functioning for the first term allowing us time to put a long term plan into action. But the threat remains that if all fails, the school may have to be closed down.”
