Nicholas Kotsiras, Victorian State Minister for Multicultural Affairs and Citizenship, will visit Beth Weizmann next Monday to address the Plenum of the Jewish Community Council of Victoria (JCCV).

The Plenum comprises delegates from 61 major communal organisations who are affiliates of the JCCV, and forms the ‘parliament’ of the Victorian Jewish community.

Prior to the Plenum, the Minister will formally open the new shared offices of the JCCV and the B’nai B’rith Anti-Defamation Commission, which were made possible by a generous grant from the Office of Multicultural Affairs and Citizenship.

JCCV President Nina Bassat AM said, “The Minister has a sound knowledge and understanding of our community and we are delighted to have Mr Kotsiras open our offices and address our affiliate organisations at the Plenum, particularly as he has just returned from a visit to Israel and will hopefully share with us some of his impressions of Israel.”

Council of Presidents to reconvene

For the first time in more than a decade, the Jewish Community Council of Victoria (JCCV) is reconvening the Council of Presidents to address matters of concern to the community.

The JCCV constitution provides that the Council of Presidents, composed of the Presidents and Vice Presidents of each affiliated organisation, together with the Executive shall form an advisory body making recommendations to the JCCV.

The Council of Presidents will be meeting on Monday evening ahead of the Plenum.

JCCV President Nina Bassat AM wrote in a letter to affiliate organisations: “At this preliminary meeting it is hoped to scope the areas which the Council of Presidents would address, which I anticipate would include current matters of concern within the community, such as child abuse, cost of Jewish education, alcohol abuse and organisational issues such as the ongoing problems of organisational funding.”

The communal leaders who sit on the Council of Presidents will be invited to attend the formal launch of the JCCV’s offices immediately after by the Hon. Nicholas Kotsiras MP.
