J-Wire has three double passes for award-winning Israeli film “GETT THE TRIAL OF VIVIANNE AMSALEM”…screening in Melbourne, Adelaide and Hobart.

Screening in the prestigious Directors’ Fortnight section at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival, Gett, the Trial of Viviane Amsalem is a searing courtroom drama from award-winning sibling directors Shlomi and Ronit Elkabetz.

In this contemporary exploration of divorce and long-term relationships, Viviane (Ronit Elkabetz) is refused a gett; a Jewish divorce which can only be given by a court of rabbinical judges and with the consent of her husband. In Israel, there is neither civil marriage nor civil divorce; only Orthodox rabbis can legalize a union or its dissolution, which is only possible with the husbands full consent. Struggling against her estranged and religiously devout husband Elisha (Simon Abkarian), Vivianne relentlessly battles the exhausting, infuriating and absurd protocols of the rabbinical court to live a life of her own design.

Winner of the Israeli Film Academy Ophir Award for Best Picture and propelled by the craft of Ronit Elkabetz, one of Israeli cinema’s most acclaimed actresses, GETT is an uncompromising portrait of a woman’s determination and struggle to overcome an unmoving patriarchy.

“In this expertly written, brilliantly acted film, Viviane struggles against her passive-aggressive husband and the rabbinical judges to legally end her marriage” – Variety.
