An all-star cast features in a new Australian black comedy about four generations of formidable Jewish women.

Rivka Hartman presents her latest play with a cast that not only features Australian stage and screen icons Anne Tenney (A Country Practice, Ensemble Theatre) and Elaine Hudson (STC) but two top local Jewish actors, John Grinston and Florette Cohen.

Hartman’s Pop Up Theatre (which produced the 2013 sell-out hit Wanting) presents My Mother and Other Catastrophes

in a choreographed reading – with dance and film projection for 4 performances on two Saturday evenings and two Sunday afternoon

From 7 March at both Gleebooks and the Sydney Jewish Museum.

The tour-de-force play promises laughter and tears – and a plentiful dose of suspense!

Hartman, who began her career in Melbourne with the famous La Mama theatre, is a multi-award-winning writer-director with two AWGIEs and an AFI award to her name. Her previous plays and films include Dream Girl, Daughters, Mother Knows Best and Bachelor Girl.

Florette Cohen’s recent appearances include Our Town and Lights! Camera! Chaos! by Baz Luhrmann and directed by Barrie Kosky.

John Grinston’s career spans screen, stage and musical theatre (I Spry, Chess, Magnum Opus and Stingray).

My Mother and Other Catastrophes will also star Anne Tenney’s daughter Madeleine Withington and ABC voice-over artist Taylor Owynns as narrator.

The play is a darkly comic story of four generations of Australian Jewish women, the matriarch of whom is 116 years old, a survivor and dominating scold, undiminished by suffering and her hopeless dysfunctional progeny.
