Sydney’s Moriah College has joined the vast majority of Australian Jewish day schools which have publicly stated that they do not discriminate against staff or students on sexual preferences.

Moriah principal John Hamey

Principal John Hamey has stated: “As a Modern Orthodox school, Moriah College teaches and endorses Torah values, which promote love and compassion to all. At Moriah College the wellbeing of our students and staff is paramount.

Moriah College does not discriminate against staff employed or to be employed on the basis of their sexuality, gender or sexual preferences.  We expect staff to act publicly in a manner that is not inconsistent with the ethos, tenets and values of the school.

Moriah College does not discriminate against students or applicants for enrolment on the basis of their sexuality or their sexual preferences.

Moriah College has never relied on the legislative exemptions contained in the Sex Discrimination Act and welcomes the Senate Legal and Constitutional Affairs References Committee’s recent recommendations to prohibit faith-based educational institutions from discriminating against students or staff members on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity or relationship status.”

    Magnificent support.

  2. Solomon Goldman says:

Whilst it is very commendable that Moriah College does not discriminate on the basis of sexual preference, however it is very distressing that the College does discriminate against the children of families where one parent (mother in particular) has been converted in a Liberal Synagogue.
This seems to be a short sighted approach, as there is no consideration that orthodoxy may one day be the choice of such a child (Bal Teshuvah).
