    Dear Sir/Madam,

According to the website of the history of Brighton Cemetery at http://www.brightoncemetery.com/HistoricInterments/Histinter_index.htm , Sir John Monash was born on the 27th June 1865 at Richhill Terrace, at 58 Dudley Street West Melbourne. Has anybody seen what 58 Dudley Street looks like? Does the original house still exist or has it been demolished and built over by another building? I have not got a clue, but I suspect that the original house does not exist due to the passage of time.

However, it would be appropriate that some sort of official acknowledgement, such as a footpath or building plaque, or a statue be erected in his honour near his place of birth at 58 Dudley Street. This important matter should be debated by the community, the National and Victorian branches of the RSL, as well as various arms of the Federal and Victorian governments. Nothing less than a proper acknowledgement of the birthplace of Sir John Monash near 58 Dudley Street West Melbourne by our society would be fitting and appropriate to his memory. I say this despite the fact that there is a University, a Hospital, and a Freeway named after him.

Sir John Monash was one of the greatest Australians in our nation’s history. As a Melbournian, I am really proud that he was born in Melbourne, was a Victorian, and became one of the great Generals of World War One. He was not born into great wealth but in relative poverty and was a self-made man. He excelled in Australia’s military, in business, academia and in Victoria’s state public service. Thank you.
