Russian academic Vladamir Kabo has died  in Canberra.The Jewish ethnographer arrived in Australia in 1990. He was imprisoned in the Gulag after WWII. He had openly shared his views for a new order in Russia and one of his friends reported Kabo to the authorities resulting in his extended imprisonment in a logging camp in norther Russia where he devloped an interest in Australia Aboriginal culture. He expanded his studied in ethnography after his release in 1954.

Fellow academic Bob Miller, involved in Jewish Care in Canberra, told J-Wire: “He did not really identify as a Jew….but he always came to the Canberra Jewish Food Fair. When I asked him why he replied that he missed the food of his childhood.”
