Israel will pay for a memorial to be built in memory of the three Israelis killed in the Christchurch earthquake, pledged Knesset speaker Reuven Rivlin.

Speaking during a tour of quake-ravaged Christchurch on Monday, Rivlin received the approval of Mayor Bob Parker to build a memorial to Gabi Ingel, Ofer Levi and Ofer Mizrachi, who were among more than 165 victims of the disaster.

Rivlin, who was joined on the visit by Likud MK Haim Katz, search and rescue personnel as well as members of the local Jewish community, joined in a memorial service to the fallen Israelis. He thanked the leaders of the Jewish community, handing them each a special gift: a decorative Tehillim book from Israel in recognition of their dedication to the welfare of the small community in Canterbury.
