Jewish Care Victoria is pleased with the announcement today by the Australian Bureau of Statistics that 61.6 per cent of almost 13 million Australian voters have shown their support to changes in marriage laws that include equal rights for the LGBTI community.

This is a landmark moment for Australians and a positive step towards marriage equality. This significant result now places Australia well within reach to join 25 other countries that have acknowledged marriage equality as a legal right for all, including the US, Canada, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.

“We hope the Government will act on this positive result by passing legislation that is reflective of the people’s mandate for a modern Australia, where diversity is accepted, supported and respected,” said CEO Bill Appleby.

We wish to re-state that Jewish Care Victoria believes that no one should be excluded or discriminated because of their gender identity, sexual orientation, or sexuality. We firmly support and are always working towards a society that is inclusive of all diversity. Each member of our society has the right to feel safe from discrimination and to access health and welfare services that affirm their personal identity. Jewish Care is committed to working with others to eradicate discrimination and respond to improving the health and wellbeing of individuals, and seeks to ensure they are provided with support and care that is free from all forms of discrimination.

The Prime Minister responded to the survey result, by stating that the Australian voting public have, “voted yes for fairness, yes for commitment, yes for love. And now it is up to us here in the parliament of Australia to get on with it, to get on with the job the Australian people have tasked us to do and get this done this year.” These are positive and encouraging sentiments from our PM, and Jewish Care hopes that as this journey continues we are all engaged in respectful debate.

Today we celebrate this result, alongside members of the LGBTI community, however we would like to remind everyone that support is always available for those who may continue to be impacted by the ongoing discourse. Please contact Jewish Care’s Front Door on 8517 5999.

Great news. Now the family court can be further clogged up with double the cases. Let’s only hope discrimination ends and the same dex community also have equal access to contraception and IVF procedures with eggs and sperm provided by the couples not outsiders. Let’s end discrimination and have women donate sperms and men to donate eggs. I’m
    All for equality.
