The Union for Progressive Judaism’s Mazon Australia has launched its Pesach appeal…

During the Pesach Seder, the leader of the service raises the Matzah and reads:  “This is the bread of poverty and persecution that our ancestors ate in the land of Egypt”.  No sooner than having done so, the leader continues saying: “Let all who are hungry, come and eat, let all who are in need, come and share the Pesach meal.”

This year Mazon Australia, a social justice initiative of the Union for Progressive Judaism, is calling on the community to bring new expression to these words through a contribution to its Pesach appeal.  “We are asking people to fulfill the mitzvah of ma’achil re’evim (feeding the poor)”  says Mazon Australia Chairman, Rabbi Gary Robuck “and all they need to do is to donate the equivalent of what you may have spent to feed one additional guest”.

“All the work of Mazon is voluntary and the total amount donated is given in the name of the Jewish community to organisations fighting hunger in the general community, whether as the result of poverty or catastrophe.”
