Man charged in Melbourne as demonstration staged in Israel
Melbourne Homicide Squad detectives have charged a man with murder following the death of Aiia Maasarwe.
20-year-old would-be rapper Codey Herrmann has been charged with rape and murder following the death of the 21-yr-old Arab-Israeli exchange student Aiia Maasarwe.
The charge follows an extensive investigation into Aiia’s death following the discovery of her body near Main Drive and Plenty Road in Bundoora on Wednesday 16 January about 7am.
Herrman will face Melbourne Magistrates’ Court shortly.
Police have thanked the community and the media for the assistance that they have provided during this investigation.
In the meantime, hundreds demonstrated yesterday in the predominantly Arab city, Baka al-Gharbiyye in the Haifa District calling in the Israeli government to expedite negotiations with the Australian government for the release of the body of Aiia Masarwe.
Some banners stated: “Everyone has the right to get home safely”.
Her body is still held by the Australian authorities.

Stephen you obviously haven’t been reading or taking notice of the media particularly the Guardian , Age, SMH , ABC and left wing Jewish media I think the family would rather deal with Hamas in Gaza or the PA and her body returned to either Gaza or Palestinian territories Father has made it quite clear he doe not want to be represented as an ‘Israeli ‘
I wonder if these are the same Arabs that appealed to Hamas to release the bodies of our soldiers?
A disgusting comment. Even the Israeli Embassy expresses condolences and offered assistance. Shame on you.
Excellent point David Samson !
Our Australian government should cut through any red tape that prevents the speedy return of Aiia Masarwe to her grieving family in Israel. They have endured enough suffering already.
Steve.
