The Australian team began their ill-fated march at the Opening Ceremony of the 1997 Maccabiah by crossing a bridge over the Yarkon River which collapsed causing the deaths of four Australian team members…now Maccabi Australia is inviting members of the 1997 contingent to complete the opening parade at this year’s Games.

Maccabi Australia has announced that Maccabi World Union would be honoured to welcome those individuals who were in the Australian delegation in 1997, and who have not participated since, the opportunity to complete their march, not withstanding the Opening Ceremony is being held in Jerusalem at Teddy Stadium.. For those who have made plans to be in Israel already this July, we encourage you to contact Lisa Borowick on lisa@maccabi.com.au who will facilitate your participation in the march.

This year’s Australian team Head of Delegation Harry Procel, General Manager of the team in 1997, noted that “whilst the 1997 marchers will be identifiable as Australian, they will march and be acknowledged separately from this year’s team.”

President of MAI, Lisa Borowick, stated that “we anticipate this opportunity being made available again in 2017 for the 20th Maccabiah – the 20th anniversary of the tragedy, for those who cannot join us this year.”

Lisa, along with the entire Board of MAI is delighted that Maccabi World Union has made this offer, acknowledging the importance to many to complete their march in their own time. For those not able to attend this year, we encourage you to start planning for 2017.
