Maccabi Victoria president Brian Swersky has stressed that all members of all sexual persuasions are welcome at all the organisation’s clubs.

Brian Swersky

Swersky said: “Maccabi Victoria is delighted that marriage equality has now been legislated and that all Australians regardless of their sexual orientation will be treated  equally under Australian law.

I am both a proud member of the Jewish community and a proud ally of the LGBTIQ community. At a community level, I think it is of utmost importance that all people, no matter their gender, sexuality or orientation are welcome to each and every Maccabi club or program. On a personal level, I have seen the hurt this debate has caused, as my daughter and her wife have been called hurtful things because of their love for each other.

May every child of every Maccabi Victoria club always know that they have a place in our clubs and our hearts no matter who they are or who they love. No matter the colour of their skin or the language that they speak. No matter their physical or cognitive ability. No matter.”

He added: “We recognise the impact that the debate and survey has had on some members of our community and hope that anyone facing mental health concerns as a result will seek appropriate support and assistance.”

Anyone seeking support and assistance can download a copy of the JCCV LGBTI Services Directory at www.jccv.org.au to seek support from an appropriate service provider.

Brian Swersky, I voted ‘no’ in the ‘marriage equality’ survey. The vilification I received could have had an awful impact on me, but I didn’t let it. Does this mean I am not welcome at Maccabi? I sincerely hope not.
My point is, Brian, don’t fall into trap of politicising what is a great organization. Stick to what Maccabi is so well renowned for, sport, not social engineering. For the good of your organization, don’t let political correctness ruin Maccabi like it’s ruining society.

    • Michael Barnett says:

Were you being vilified for being heterosexual, for being married, for being cis-gender, or for wanting to stop other people from being treated equally under the law?

      • Robert Weil says:

None of the above Michael. Just for wanting to contribute to the debate and to express my point of view which may have differed from yours.

        • Michael Barnett says:

It’s unpleasant to experience vilification for being a persecuted minority, isn’t it?

          • Robert Weil says:

I’m not part a of persecuted minority Michael. I am a victim of the persecuting minority (about 3% of the population) which you represent that is content to destroy Western civilization, addle the minds of innocent children with radical gender fluidity claptrap, all for the sake of you and your ilk getting a ‘feel-good’ hit.

            • Michael Barnett says:

Such a dystopian world-view Robert. You fabricate a consipacy theory bigger than the one where the Jews are in control of the world.

    • Dino Di Felice says:

Oh Robert, did you feel the need to call lifeline? Have your rights been taken? A victim of violence maybe?

      The sky is falling!

You ignore friends and family of LGBTI people. Got a percentage for that?

      • Robert Weil says:

No Dino, the sky has not fallen in, but a severe blow has been dealt to society that has flourished to date by adhering to Judeo-Christian values. And for your information my very closest friend in the world was gay (sadly he recently passed away), and I have a LARGE percentage of friends who are gay and relatives who’s children are gay. I have no less love or respect for them. My issue is with SSM. They know my feelings on this issue. Some agree with me some don’t. End of story.

  2. Michael Barnett says:

Thank you Maccabi. This is a powerful statement that help make it so much easier for younger people to be accepted in the community irrespective of their differences.
