Limmud in your Lounge has been a promising opportunity to trial a new and more intimate Limmud experience between the annual major events bringing Limmud into private homes.

Limmud at home

Seven hosts in homes across Sydney hosted discussions and presentations on diverse topics, such as politics (Could a Jeremy Corbyn-esque figure emerge in Australia?), Jewish identity (How I Met Your Mother: The switch from patrilineal to matrilineal descent relationships,  Marrying out or marrying in: What’s the reality for mixed-background relationships?) and local history (Australian Stories: Diverse Jewish family histories).

The smaller format in living rooms enabled more intimate discussions to take place and for people to meet each other in a relaxed, and unrushed manner. Many of the sessions were sold-out, and people left offering to host future events in their homes.

Eli Levi, volunteer chair and curator said: “Limmud in your Lounge combines everything so many of us love about Limmud, with the comfort of an intimate lounge room setting. I’m excited to see such a high calibre of speakers from our local Jewish community on such a diverse range of topics!”

Anna Stern, Limmud Program Manager at Shalom added: “Our eight hosts, 17 presenters and panellist and our main organiser, Eli Levi, dedicated countless hours to making this happen. Limmud is volunteer-driven and gives people in our community the opportunity to take on leadership roles, try out teaching and presenting, learn new skills and meet new people. It’s a testament to their dedication and vision that LIYL was such a success and that Limmud continues to be an exciting, vibrant and inclusive place for learning and debate in our community.”
