The Kashrut Authority has defended its position in the creation of a new marketplace for Kosher meat pies formerly dominated by Bondi Kosher food supplier  Katzys.

KA president Baron Revelman told J-Wire: “In regard to Katzy’s, Hadassa and Garlo’s pies, we were approached by Coles Supermarkets, and asked to explore the possibility of supervising kosher meat pies and, given the importance of Coles to the kosher community, we could hardly refuse.   We can likewise hardly ask Garlo’s to not approach whomever they wish to market their products, and they approached Hadassa who is their meat supplier, Grandma Moses and Krinsky’s.   Their primary market we believe will be Coles and IGA.  I am confident Katzy’s, with a full range of different pies will have little difficulty competing with Garlo’s single variety.   There is no “preferential treatment” given to anyone in any of our dealings or procedures.

Our primary role is to facilitate as many kosher products and services to the community as possible. We are a kashrut licensing authority not a determiner of the viability of the market, and as such we license purely on acceptance of our Halachic guidelines and of course payment of fair and reasonable fees. In regard to Katzy’s, Hadassa and Garlo’s pies, we were approached by Coles Supermarkets, and asked to explore the possibility of supervising kosher meat pies and, given the importance of Coles to the kosher community, we could hardly refuse.
