Emanuel School’s Wolanski Family Specialist Learning Centre is delighted to host  ‘An evening with Barbara Arrowsmith Young’

emanuelBarbara, a Canadian educator and author, has produced an internationally acclaimed program that uses the principles of neuroplasticity to remediate certain learning disorders.

Emanuel School’s interest in the program was sparked when Specialist Learning Centre director and educational psychologist Dr Lynn Joffe visited the Arrowsmith Foundation and other schools in Canada running the program.  So impressed was Barbara by our Centre’s philosophy that she requested the School be a host venue for her upcoming tour of Australia.

Anne Hastings, Principal of Emanuel School commented, “We pride ourselves on the way the School is able to offer an extensive program to students of all learning abilities. Our staff continually seeks out the latest in educational practices to ensure the best possible learning environment for all of our students. By hosting Barbara Arrowsmith Young we hope to share her vast knowledge and experience with educators and families all around Sydney.”

Barbara has herself travelled through life with multiple learning disabilities. Using the model of her own struggles, she sought answers from neurological and brain-related research to produce a program that can make life-changing differences to people of all ages.

Her practices are underpinned by what subsequent research in the field of neuroplasticity is positing, namely, that aspects of the brain are more malleable and able to adapt and change than it was previously believed. With controlled intensive and rigorous practice, this plasticity can be harnessed to change learning potential permanently, so that individuals with certain learning styles and difficulties are better able to interact in academic and work environments and communicate more effectively.

Barbara’s journey in overcoming her difficulties is highlighted in Norman Doidge’s book, ‘The Brain that Changes Itself’ and in her own highly acclaimed book, ‘The Woman Who Changed Her Brain’.
