J-Wire spoke to Celine Winter who has worked for the Kosher caterer for 43 years of its 50 years in business.

Winter was taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation after being evacuated with another worker during the fire on Wednesday.

She told J-Wire: “The fire was caused by an electric fault in the roof. It was a quiet day and there were only two of us in the factory. In the 43 years I have been with the company it was the first time we had been shut down.

But the lack of premises will not stop Peter Unger Catering.

“We have a kiddush to cater and we will use Elwood Synagogue’s kitchen. We will be able to manage all existing bookings.”

Peter Unger Catering services kosher functions only and expects to find temporary premises in the very near future.

The company backed up Sydney’s Kosher meals on wheels service when the organisation’s caterer went in to liquidation.

Metropolitan Fire Brigade spokesman Steve Moore told media that at least 17 vehicles had been sent to battle the fire, which was around 20 by 30 metres in size.

“The fire was well alight when the first crews arrived with buildings being threatened on both sides,” he said. Residents in the surrounding area were also evacuated.
