Australia’s Foreign Minister Julie Bishop has called comments made by Federal Labor MP Michael Danby in a statement demanding a reversal of the Government’s Iran policy “juvenile”.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop told J-Wire: ” The Australian government is a steadfast friend of Israel and reversed several UN voting positions of the former Labor government, of which Michael Danby was a member.

The government also rejects the antisemitic Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions campaign supported by many within Labor and the union movement.

Mr Danby voted for the weakening of Australia’s border protection laws under the Labor government, which resulted in thousands of Iranians entering Australia illegally.

The Coalition government stopped the flow of illegal migration and is negotiating with Iran to facilitate the return of its citizens.

Mr Danby should apologise for his role in supporting the weakening of our border protection laws, and for the Labor movement’s support of BDS before making further juvenile comments.”

Danby said in a story published yesterday on J-Wire: “Malcolm Turnbull can be a friend of Israel or a friend of the dangerous Iranian regime. He cannot be both.”

Danby added: “With Iran still making blood-curdling against Israel, Prime Minister Turnbull must call Ms Bishop in and order her to halt and reverse this slide towards appeasement of the hard-line, bellicose regime in Tehran.”

    Sorry for typo, Sylvia.
    Hear, hear, Sylvia Freeman.

  2. Sylvia Freeman says:

I am an open and partisan supporter of Michael Danby M.P. Yet even I am surprised at his courage in challenging Foreign Minister Julie Bishop’s drift to Iran with public bill boards, such as the one in St Kilda Junction. Conservative advocates of the current
government will criticise him, but Ms Bishop recently confirmed to Patricia Karvelas, that the Australian government were contemplating Iranian consulates in Melbourne and Sydney. Are they mad? Don’t the government remember what Iranian “diplomats”
did to the Jewish community centre in Argentina. Eighty-eight people died at the Jewish Community Centre in Buenos Aries at the hand of Iranian “diplomats” and consulates. If we manage to avert this danger in Australia, it will only be because Michael
Danby drew a line in the sand, and embarrassed the Liberal Government in to withdrawing this crazy prospect of Iranian consulates in our major cities..

  3. Liat Nagar says:

Why are you all so fixated on the Labor Party when it’s Julie Bishop’s meeting and sycophantic behaviour in Iran that’s the subject matter? And on another note, individuals and governments should make their own decisions according to their own expertise and morality, regardless of how successful or otherwise the US, Saudi Arabia, et al, are.

What a classic example of deviation, deflection and turning a blind eye.

    • Leon Poddebsky says:

It is utterly naive to think that any Australian government (of either party) will refrain from joining “the international community”‘s rush to embrace the ayatolla regime.

I intend to run for the senate on the policy that there must be IQ tests for parliamentarians.

AND that there be special IQ tests for those who espouse socialism, it’s infinite variations on communism. And all their heroic excuses espousing same.

Those of the proletariat can vie for the annual friends of stupid prize for making the best case for supporting Israel. By standing up to the socialist left and Bob Carr of the right and all incantations in between at the next meeting of the Laboured Party.

Sigh. You would think I had nothing better to do with 45 mins to Shabbat!

    • Geoff Seidner says:

      THIS SHOULD HAVE READ:

Those of the proletariat can vie for the annual friends of stupid prize for making the best case for ABUSING Israel.

      My apologies for error

    • Eleonora Mostert says:

      I’ll vote for you.

  5. Yakov says:

Why is the Liberal government kissing up to Iran when Iran is threatening to destroy Israel?

Julie Bishop is obfuscating. I want answers.

  6. Leon Poddebsky says:

On the other hand, the Liberal-National Coalition has, objectively, been a supporter of rational diplomacy with respect to Israel, diplomacy which has worked in the national interest of Australia. Would it be in Australia’s national interest, for example, to fabricate at this time a third “Palestinian” state [ additionally to Gaza and Jordan], one which all the existing evidence shows, would increase the instability in the region?
The sinister antisemitic ALP lobby’s thinking is that Israel’s demise would weaken the USA and capitalism, and would thus contribute to the triumph of the “socialist world order.” “Out of chaos would emerge the socialist paradise.”
As for Iran’s nuclearisation, if those powerful friends of the USA, Saudi Arabia and other Gulf States, were unable to influence Mr Obama and Congress to change course, how could Australia do so?

    • Douglas Kirsner says:

While there may be some members of the ALP who are antisemitic, their general record from Evatt to Hawke to Crean, Beazley, Rudd, Gillard and Shorten demonstrates just the opposite! Abandoning or demonising the alternate government of Australia is not smart, especially on a false premise.

      • Leon Poddebsky says:

In many respects, not just on this issue, the Australian Labor Party is not what it used to be.

  7. Leon Poddebsky says:

Former Federal Labor Government Minister, Barry Cohen, has stated that the Australian Labor Party has become “an antisemitic party” according to “an ALP icon.”
The outrageous, irrational savagery of the ALP’s powerful, sinister anti-Israel lobby gives a lot of credibility to that grave charge.
Why have the decent members not cleaned up the ALP’s act?

    • Henry Herzog says:

Mr Poddesbsky can rant on all he likes about Labor this and Labor that, and that they are all a bunch of anti-Semites blah, blah, blah. But it’s the Liberals who are welcoming Iran, who want Israel wiped off the map, with open arms to our world.
