Jewish Participation in Short Play Festival

Short+Sweet Sydney gets underway this summer with a host of Jewish artists involved. The hugely popular short play festival – which now has seasons in Melbourne and Brisbane as well as other Australian capitals, regional centres and in half a dozen international cities – is in its 11th year in Sydney.
Among the more than 180 plays showing between January and March at King Street Theatre Newtown, all hoping to win through to the gala finals at the Seymour Centre, a number feature the work of Jewish writers or showcase the work of Jewish directors and actors.

Ron Elisha

Melbourne playwright and GP Ron Elisha (Two, Einstein, In Duty Bound, The Goldberg Variations) premieres his new piece “Crime Scene” in week one (4-8 January).
“Norman is excited about his first day in a brand new job – he wants to make a good impression. The trouble is, his wife doesn’t ‘do’ impressions…” It features Daniella Hoffman.

Robert Sharpe

Also starring in his own play is Robert Sharpe whose recent starring roles in Sydney include One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest, The Servant of Two Masters, Don Quixote, Alex and Eve (Sydney and Adelaide), Alex and Eve the Wedding, Out of Sight Out of Murder and Manly Mates. His third Short+Sweet play and his 6th appearance as an actor, this play is is a hilarious Burlesque send-up called “Six Naked Girls at a Nudist Beach.”

Lisa Eismen directs Pete Malicki’s play “V.D” week 6 (8-12 Feb) and her own “The Blue Rock” in Week 9 (29 Feb – 4 March), while Victor Kline directs “The Narcoleptic Pillow Fight” by Alex Dremann (USA) week 6 (8-12 Feb). Nir Shelter directs his own “Un Subordinating” at the Sidetrack Theatre in Week 10 (14-18 March). Featured overseas Jewish writers include Jamie Feldman (Canada), Ira Gammerman (USA), Rich Rubin (USA), Michael Stang (USA).

Short+Sweet takes place through January, February and March at King Street Theatre, Newtown (formerly Newtown Theatre).
Top 100 performances play Wed-Sat 8pm + Sun 5.15pm with ‘Wildcard’ performances are Sat 3pm and Sun 1pm.
The Gala Finals take place on 30 and 31 March at the Seymour Centre York Theatre.
