JIFF

Cementing its reputation for delivering cinema of the highest quality, JIFF is showcasing all the mustsee films from the recentlyannounced Ophir Award (Israeli Oscars) nominations.

Committed to delivering stimulating and diverse content of premiere calibre, and with an emphasis on the foremost films to emerge from Israel in the past year, JIFF is proud to present the principal Best Picture and Best Director nominations from the 2016 Ophir Awards.

Amongst JIFF titles boasting numerous nominations, feature films Our Father and Sand Storm are nominated for an equalhighest twelve Ophir Awards respectively.

Director Meni Yaesh’s (God’s Neighbours JIFF 2012) film, Our Father, is a gritty and visceral thriller with captivating performances from husband and wife duo, Moris Cohen (winner of the Best Actor Award at the Jerusalem Film Festival), and Rotem ZismanCohen.

A story of tradition, modernity and divided family, Elite Zexer’s exquisite debut feature S and Storm portrays a mother and daughter bound by custom in a Bedouin village, struggling to adapt to a changing world. A darling of film festival critics and audiences around the world and winner of the Grand Jury Prize in the World Cinematic Dramatic section at Sundance, Sand Storm is a unique and memorable film from a significant new Israeli filmmaker.

Putting the ‘high’ in l’chayim’, the resonating and laughoutloud One Week and a Day is nominated for seven Ophir awards, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actress. Premiering at Cannes Film Festival (Critics’ Week), and dominating the competition at the Jerusalem Film Festival, this film offers an affecting look at two parents who act in outlandish ways as they attempt to regain a sense of control over their lives following the passing of their son.

Described as an Israeli American Beauty and tracing the evocative story of an army discharge transitioning to civilian life after 27 years, Beyond the Mountain and Hills premiered at Cannes Film Festival (Un Certain Regard), with star Shiree NadavNaor awarded Best Actress at the Jerusalem Film Festival. Beyond the Mountain and Hills is nominated for six Ophir Awards, including Best Feature Film, Best Director, Best Supporting Actress and Best Script.

Amongst JIFF’s 2016 selection of outstanding and challenging documentaries, T he Settlers and Presenting Princess Shaw vie for Best Documentary at the Ophir Awards. Moving beyond what is reported in the news, T he Settlers offers a historical overview, geopolitical study, and intimate look at the history of settlements in the West Bank. In the unique, and internationallylauded, Presenting Princess Shaw, Israeli documentarian Ido Haar captures the unlikely friendship that grows between Israeli Youtube mashup artist, Kutiman, and Princess Shaw, a troubled New Orleans singer.
