Sydney care facility Jewish House will extend its operations to two Jewish Houses following the purchase of a block of units in Bondi to be used as temporary housing for the homeless.

The property, formerly owned by the Sydney Yeshiva was bought at open auction for $2.37 million. Jewish House recently received a donation of $1 million from a Sydney supporter.

CEO Rabbi Mendel Kastel told J-Wire: ” We have studied research on the homeless carried out in the U.S. and other developed countries and the plan is to temporarily house Jews in a distressed situation and provide them with services which will hopefully put them in a position to reestablish themselves in the community in their homes.”

Rabbi Kastel said that the planned length of stay in the new facility would be between three and twelve months.

With work to be done on the newly acquired block of six two-bedroom units, Rabbi Kastel hopes to see them operative around the beginning of April next year.
