In the last decade the Israeli jazz scene has served notice of its vibrancy and creativity. There are now major jazz festivals with impressive international rosters and a considerable number of highly talented musicians many of whom are not afraid to test themselves in New York and other major jazz centres.

Pianist Gadi Lehavi is 16 years old and played in Israel with jazz great Dave Liebman at the age of 13.

“A very talented composer, arranger, and performer… the caliber of which is a rare find in jazz today. Degibri’s music treads uncharted waters…”Herbie Hancock

Attracting the attention of Herbie Hancock in the late 1990s, saxophonist Degibri performed with his Hancock’s sextet until 2002. He has worked diligently to absorb the tradition by spending time in the bands of eminent, elder statesmen such as Ron Carter and Al Foster. As well as recording five CDs he’s also worked with the Mingus Big Band, Brad Mehldau, Clark Terry, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Aaron Goldberg and in October 2011, he performed with Kenny Barron at the Red Sea Jazz Festival of which he is now co-artistic director.

The quartet he brings to Australia is his current working band and the you will have the opportunity to experience the art of a musician from an emerging creative centre of jazz.

“A young tenor saxophonist from Israel, Eli Degibri, is just starting to be known in New York, Don’t miss him. He commanded attention when he toured with Herbie Hancock. He’s a very modern improviser, super artful; his creations are spiky and fractured but immaculately sculptured ”ddBen Ratlif, The New York Times

Elil also represented Israel’s contribution to jazz at UNESCO’s International Jazz Day on 30 April along with a number of other hand-picked leading jazz musicians from around the world including Wynton Marsalis, Hugh Masakela and Herbie Hancock. This event was hosted by Quincy Jones, Morgan Freeman, Robert DeNiro and Michael Douglas.
