An IDF Apache helicopter has successfully intercepted an Iranian unmanned aerial vehicle launched from Syria and infiltrated Israel. The aircraft was identified by the Aerial Defense Systems early on and was under surveillance until the interception.

In response, IDF attacked the Iranian aircraft’s launch components in Syrian territory.

Later, also in response to the Iranian UAV that was launched at Israeli territory and was intercepted by the IDF, Israeli Air Force (IAF) aircraft targeted 12 targets in Syria, including three aerial defense batteries and four Iranian targets that are part of Iran’s military establishment in Syria.

During the attack, multiple anti-aircraft missiles were fired at IAF aircraft. The two pilots of an F-16 jet ejected from the aircraft as per procedure, one of whom was seriously injured and taken to the hospital for medical treatment.

“The Syrians and the Iranians, from our point of view, are playing with fire. The Syrians are playing with fire when they allow the Iranians to attack Israel from their soil. We are willing, prepared, and capable to exact a heavy price on anyone that attacks us. However, we are not looking to escalate the situation,” Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus, Head of the International Media Desk.

The IDF sees the Iranian attack and the Syrian response as severe violations of Israeli sovereignty. The IDF will continue to act against any attempt to infiltrate Israeli airspace and will act with determination to prevent any breach of Israeli sovereignty.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said: “I have been warning for some time about the dangers of Iran’s military entrenchment in Syria. Iran seeks to use Syrian territory to attack Israel for its professed goal of destroying Israel. This morning Iran brazenly violated Israel’s sovereignty. They dispatched an Iranian drone from Syrian territory into Israel. And this demonstrates that our warnings were 100% correct. Israel holds Iran and its Syrian hosts responsible for today’s aggression. We will continue to do whatever is necessary to protect our sovereignty and our security.”

President Reuven Rivlin was briefed on the operational situation, and spoke with Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Gadi Eizenkot and Air Force Commander, Maj. Gen. Amikam Norkin.
The President commended Israel’s security forces for their firm and resolute defense measures in the face of further proof of the danger of Iranian consolidation in the region, which the State of Israel would not allow.
The President asked them to convey the appreciation and thanks of the entire nation to the commanders and soldiers, and to all the forces working to defend Israel, for their full control over the operational events, and for the greatly valued return to calm for all the residents of the north and the many travellers who visited the area.
In the last hour, the President spoke with the pilot who was lightly injured. The President thanked him and heard from him about his recovery. ”My heart is with you and your comrades, and I hope that I will meet you soon. You and the entire squadron have proven that you do not come back until your mission is fulfilled, and I thank God together with the entire nation that you have returned.”

One Response to “Israel intercepts Iranian drone launched from Syria”
  1. Adrian Jackson says:

With an Israeli Air Force fighter aircraft shot down yesterday and a Russian aeroplane a week earlier the dynamics are changing.

The forces of at least two groups on the ground now have ground to air missiles. The drone may have been bait that the IAF fell for too, loosing a F-16 as a result.

Anyhow its better that the RAAF F-18 Hornets that were in in Iraq and Syria until recently are safe at home now.
