Australian Human Rights Commission President Gillian Triggs has extended the closing date for nominations for the 2014 Australian Human Rights Awards until Friday 26 September.

AHRCAHRCShe  said nominations were sought for a range of award categories covering the community sector, business, law, literature and the media.

“Last year we received more than 240 nominations, which was more than any other year in the Awards 27-year history,” Professor Triggs said.

“This year we encourage even more individuals and organisations to nominate for the awards and help us set a new record.

“We have already received a number of high calibre nominations, and have a particularly strong field of nominees for the Young People’s Human Rights Medal.

“These inspiring young Australians have shown great compassion and integrity to protect and advance human rights in their communities.

“If you have not yet nominated in this year’s awards, I encourage you to consider a human rights hero in your organisation, business or community who is helping to make Australia a better place.”

Nominations are sought for 10 award categories:

  • The Human Rights Medal
  • The Young People’s Human Rights Medal
  • The Business Award
  • The Literature Award
  • The Print and Online Media Award
  • The Radio Award
  • The Television Award
  • The Community Organisation Award
  • The Community Individual Award
  • The Law Award

The awards acknowledge and celebrate extraordinary Australians, from a diverse range of backgrounds and experiences, who are working to enhance our rights and freedoms, promote equality and support social harmony.

The awards will be presented at a ceremony on Human Rights Day, 10 December 2014, at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney. The Chaser’s Craig Reucassel will return as host of this year’s awards.
