Hobart synagogue short-listed for a raft of honours

Jordana Schmidt, president of the Hobart Hebrew Congregation, has been recognised for her work in community and education and has been shortlisted in two categories of the Tasmanian Young Achievers’ Awards for the second year running.

29-yr-old Jordana was nominated for Young Australian of the Year 2017.

She is shortlisted in the Heather and Christopher Chong Community Service and Volunteer category for her work for the Tasmanian Jewish community as president of the HHC and Vice President (Tasmania) of the ECAJ.

She has been for the award for her other volunteer efforts in the Country Women’s Association, fundraising for various charities and tutoring adolescents and adults with low literacy and numeracy at no cost.

She is also shortlisted in the University of Tasmania, Faculty of Education Teaching Excellence category. Jordana is the head of the humanities department in a rural Tasmanian school, and was instrumental in winning her school the Tasmanian Human Rights Week ‘Fairer World School’ Award in 2014.

She is also pursuing her Master of Education (Educational Leadership and Policy) from Monash and has presented papers on Genocide Education to professional organisations.

Her upcoming paper ‘Teaching Genocide Education in Tasmanian Schools’ will be presented in July at the International Association of Genocide Scholars conference.

Jordana has three children.
