History stoush turns nasty

It was an Estimates hearing and two senators were drawing history to make their points on research.

In the blue corner was Liberal Senator James Paterson responding to a remark made by Labor Senator Kim Carr in the red corner using the French Revolution to make his point. Liberal Paterson used the Russian Revolution to fire back.

And then it turned nasty.

Kim Carr told Senator Paterson that “those in the Hitler Youth would understand that only too well.”

Senator Paterson told Senator Carr that accusing someone of being a Nazi is appalling.

Senator Carr apologised for his remarks.

Joint CEO of The Executive Council of Australian Jewry Alex Ryvchin said: “Even in the heat of political battle, accusing an Australian Senator of being a Nazi is irresponsible. Though surely unintended, Senator Carr’s statement served to minimise the unparalleled evil of Nazism and reduce it to a punchline. He was right to withdraw the remark.”
